Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Uterine Cancer

What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer stands as one of the most prevalent malignancies impacting the female reproductive system. It initiates when normal uterine cells undergo alterations, proliferating uncontrollably and forming a mass termed a tumor.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Uterine cancer primarily manifests in individuals aged 50 and above, with the typical age at diagnosis being 60. Cases among those younger than 45 are rare.

Risk factors vary based on age and may include:
  • Obesity
  • Family history of uterine cancer
  • Nulliparity (not having children)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Exposure to radiation therapy
  • Prolonged exposure to estrogen
  • Unhealthy dietary habits
Preventive Measures
  • Utilization of birth control pills
  • Maintenance of a healthy weight
  • Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels
Screening for Uterine Cancer
Screening examinations for uterine cancer play a crucial role in early detection, enhancing the chances of successful treatment.
Common Screening Method:
  • Transvaginal ultrasound
Symptoms & Signs
Uterine cancer may present with the following symptoms:
  • Unusual bleeding, spotting, or discharge from the vagina
  • Menorrhagia, characterized by excessively heavy or prolonged bleeding, or abnormal uterine bleeding in premenopausal women (AUB)
  • Abnormal Pap test results
  • Experiencing pelvic pain
  • Bowel or urinary issues

Diagnosis

Diagnostic procedures for uterine cancer ascertain the presence of the disease and its severity.

Tools and Tests:
  • Pelvic examination/clinical examination
  • MRI Pelvis
  • CT Scan of the chest and abdomen
  • PET scan
  • Transvaginal Ultrasound
  • Dilation and curettage (D&C)
  • Endometrial biopsy
Sub-Types:
  • Adenocarcinoma
  • Sarcoma:
    • Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS).
    • Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS)
  • Undifferentiated sarcoma
Stages:
  • Stage 1: The cancer remains confined within the uterus or womb.
  • Stage 2: The tumor has infiltrated the cervical stroma but has not spread to other body sites beyond the uterus.
  • Stage 3: Although still localized in the pelvic region, the cancer has extended beyond the uterus.
  • Stage 4: Cancer has metastasized to distant organs, the rectum, the bladder, or both.
Treatment Approaches
  • Surgical Oncology:

Surgery typically serves as the primary treatment option for uterine cancer. Common surgical procedures include:
     – Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus and cervix.
     – Lymph Node Dissection: Removal of lymph nodes.

  • Medical Oncology:
     – Chemotherapy: Using chemicals to kill cancer cells. It may involve single-drug therapy or combination chemotherapy.
     – Targeted Therapy: Employed alongside chemotherapy, targeted drugs aim at specific molecules within cancer cells.
     – Immunotherapy: Enhancing the body’s immune response to fight cancer cells, particularly effective in advanced cases.
     – Hormone Therapy: Lowering hormone levels to impede cancer growth, especially beneficial for advanced uterine cancer.
     – Radiation Therapy: Utilizing high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells, either externally or internally through implanted radiation sources.
  • Managing Treatment Challenges
In addition to grappling with the physical effects of uterine cancer treatment, individuals often contend with the financial strain and emotional toll of cancer care. Seeking support from a counselor, trusted family member, or friend can offer solace during this trying time. Oncowin extends a range of resources, including psycho-onco counseling and nutritional guidance, to aid patients in navigating the emotional and nutritional aspects of their treatment journey.
Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Prioritize maintaining a healthy weight throughout treatment.
  • Incorporate whole grains into your diet for added nutritional benefits.
  • Opt for plant-based proteins to support your body’s healing process.
Don’ts:
  • Steer clear of processed and red meats, which can exacerbate treatment side effects.
  • Reduce your intake of salt and sugar to support overall health during treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it may interfere with your body’s response to treatment.
After Treatment: Supporting Uterine Cancer Survivors

Uterine cancer survivors may face long-term side effects from various treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy. These side effects can manifest as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bladder irritation, skin changes, and low blood counts. In addition to physical challenges, survivors may benefit from emotional support and understanding from their families. Joining uterine cancer post-treatment survivorship support groups can provide valuable camaraderie and shared experiences.

Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:

After completing treatment, it’s crucial to request a personalized follow-up care plan from your healthcare provider. This plan will be tailored to your specific type and stage of cancer, outlining the necessary steps for ongoing monitoring and support. Regular follow-up appointments are essential for tracking your progress, addressing any concerns or side effects, and ensuring that you receive the appropriate care moving forward.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs of Recurrence

Regular surveillance and monitoring are crucial components of post-treatment care, aimed at detecting any signs or symptoms of cancer recurrence. Attending all scheduled follow-up appointments is essential, as healthcare providers can conduct thorough evaluations and screenings to identify any potential recurrence early on. It’s important not to overlook any symptoms that may arise, as even subtle changes could indicate a recurrence. By remaining vigilant and communicating openly with your healthcare team, you can ensure that any signs of recurrence are promptly addressed and treated.
