Thyroid Cancer
In the journey against thyroid cancer, every step forward is backed by an army of support, showing that strength lies not just in the individual, but in the unity of those who stand together.
Breast Cancer
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.
Thyroid Cancer
What is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer has emerged as a significant form of cancer, with more than 42 million cases reported in India, according to various studies. Situated below the Adam’s Apple, the thyroid gland plays a crucial role in hormone secretion, regulating functions such as heart rate, metabolism, bone development, and body temperature.
The thyroid gland comprises various types of cells, including follicular cells, parafollicular or C cells, immune system cells or lymphocytes, and stromal cells. Cancer can develop from these cells, giving rise to different types of thyroid cancer such as follicular thyroid cancer, papillary thyroid cancer, anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and others.
Risk Factors and Prevention
As individuals age, their risk of colorectal cancer increases, with the average diagnosis age being 68 for men and 72 for women with colon cancer.
Causes of Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer exhibits a higher prevalence among females, with three out of four patients being women. It is more commonly diagnosed in individuals aged 20 to 55 years.
Several factors contribute to the development of thyroid cancer, including genetic alterations inherited within families. Additionally, precancerous polyps in the colon may elevate the risk of papillary thyroid cancer.
Exposure to radiation in the head and neck region, whether from medical therapy for lymphoma or other sources, is associated with an increased likelihood of developing follicular thyroid cancer and papillary thyroid carcinoma. Notably, any form of radiation exposure, regardless of intensity or type, can potentially lead to thyroid carcinoma.
Dietary factors, such as low iodine intake, and a history of thyroid enlargement or goiter may also play a role in thyroid cancer risk. Additionally, certain racial and ethnic backgrounds may influence susceptibility to the disease.
Preventive proactive Measures
- Minimize radiation exposure: Avoid unnecessary medical imaging and other sources of radiation whenever possible.
- Genetic testing: Individuals with a family history of medullary thyroid cancer should undergo genetic testing to identify potential gene mutations. Consultation with a specialist doctor can provide the latest information on genetic counseling and testing.
- Self-checks and screening: Regular self-examinations of the neck area and screening tests, such as thyroid ultrasound, can aid in the early detection of any abnormalities.
- Healthy diet: Consuming a balanced diet rich in iodine can support thyroid health. Incorporate iodine-rich foods into your meals to ensure adequate intake.
Screening for Thyroid cancer
Screening for thyroid cancer typically involves various methods, including self-examinations, incidental discovery during ultrasounds conducted for other health concerns, or identification of neck lumps or swelling during routine medical check-ups. Additionally, thyroid nodules may be detected incidentally during surgical procedures performed for unrelated conditions.
Signs and symptoms
Signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer may not manifest in the early stages, particularly in certain types of thyroid cancers.
- Palpable thyroid nodules on the side of the neck
- Hoarseness of voice
- Difficulty swallowing and swelling in the neck region
- Persistent throat and neck pain
Diagnosis
Thyroid cancer diagnosis involves a series of tests and procedures:
- Physical examination of the neck to palpate for nodules and inquire about family history and risk factors.
- Blood tests to assess thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and thyroid hormone levels.
- Ultrasound imaging of the lower neck region.
- Fine needle aspiration biopsy to obtain tissue samples from the thyroid for specialized analysis.
- Radioactive iodine scan using a specialized camera to detect cancerous cells throughout the body.
- Additional imaging tests such as MRI, CT scan, and ultrasound, as deemed necessary.
- Genetic testing for specific types of thyroid cancer, such as medullary thyroid cancer and follicular thyroid carcinoma.
Thyroid cancer encompasses four main types:
- Papillary Thyroid Cancer
- Follicular Thyroid Cancer
- Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer
- Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid Cancer Staging
Physicians determine the stage of thyroid cancer based on diagnostic imaging results.
Staging is indicated by a numerical value ranging from 1 to 4. Stage 1 represents an initial stage with a higher likelihood of successful treatment, whereas stage 4 denotes an advanced stage characterized by cancer spreading to other parts of the body. It’s important to note that anaplastic and medullary thyroid cancers have distinct staging criteria, while follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma follow their respective staging systems.
Treatment Approaches
Treatment Approaches for Thyroid Cancer
Various treatment modalities are employed for thyroid cancers:
- Surgical Intervention:
This may entail one or more of the following procedures:
- – Lobectomy
- – Near-total Thyroidectomy, with or without Neck Node Dissection
- – Total Thyroidectomy, with or without Neck Node Dissection
- Radiation Therapy:
Both internal and external radiation therapy, including the administration of radioactive iodine, may be utilized.
- Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapeutic agents may be employed in certain cases.
- Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy
This therapy aims to restore thyroid hormone levels in the body.
- Targeted Therapy:
Utilization of tyrosine kinase inhibitors as a targeted therapy approach.
- Immunotherapy:
Stimulation of the immune system to bolster its ability to combat cancer cells.
Supportive Care and Follow-up Protocol for Thyroid Cancer
Post-treatment for thyroid cancer involves palliative or supportive care, which addresses the mental, physical, social, and emotional impact of cancer treatment.
Follow-up and Cancer Care Plan:
- Establish a Follow-up Plan:
Consult your doctor to devise a follow-up plan and adhere to it diligently, as thyroid cancer carries a heightened risk of recurrence. - Vigilance for Signs and Symptoms:
Remain vigilant for any signs or symptoms that may indicate a recurrence of cancer. - Manage Probable Side Effects:
Your healthcare provider will apprise you of potential side effects and offer guidance on post-treatment care during the maintenance phase. - Regular Follow-up Appointments:
Attend scheduled follow-up appointments, which typically entail physical examinations and diagnostic tests to monitor your recovery progress. - Long-term Monitoring:
Be prepared for long-term monitoring by visiting your doctor for check-ups every six months to a year.
