Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Prostate Cancer

What is Prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer ranks as the second most common cancer in men after skin cancer and is the fourth most diagnosed cancer worldwide.

This serious disease originates in the prostate gland, which is responsible for producing seminal fluid. This fluid plays a crucial role in nourishing and transporting sperm.Certain prostate cancers progress slowly and are not aggressive. However, other forms of prostate cancer can grow quickly, leading to an enlarged prostate and requiring prompt medical intervention.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Age is the primary risk factor for prostate cancer, particularly affecting men in their late fifties and older.

Risk factors for Prostate cancer include:
  • A family history of prostate cancer
  • Sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and unhealthy urban living habits
  • Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome
  • Genetic mutations passed down through generations
  • Obesity
Preventive Measures
  • Enhance your diet with fruits, vegetables, green tea, and soy products
  • Avoid consuming fried and grilled meats
  • Reduce intake of saturated and trans fats, and increase omega-3 fatty acids
  • Engage in regular physical activity and maintain a healthy BMI
  • Refrain from alcohol and smoking
  • Stay sexually active and boost your vitamin D levels
Screening for Prostate Cancer

Screening is essential for detecting cancer early, allowing for timely and effective treatment.

Prostate cancer screening involves:
  • Prostate-Specific Antigen Test (PSAT)
  • Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)
Recognizing Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of prostate cancer can differ from one individual to another, with some men not experiencing any symptoms at all.

Recognizing Symptoms

Common indicators of prostate cancer include:

  • Difficulty or interruption during urination
  • Increased frequency of urination, especially at night
  • Struggles to fully empty the bladder
  • Severe pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Discomfort in the hips, pelvis, or lower back
  • Presence of blood in semen or urine
  • Painful ejaculation
Note: While these symptoms may indicate prostate cancer, they could also be linked to other conditions. If you experience any of these, it’s crucial to consult a doctor promptly.
Diagnosis

Following a prostate cancer diagnosis via PSA testing, Digital Rectal Examination, Biopsy, and Imaging tests, physicians determine the disease’s severity, known as staging. Staging helps gauge the extent of the disease and formulates an appropriate treatment plan.

Stage 1:
  • PSA levels remain below ten, and Grade group 1.
  • Prostate cancer at this stage is potentially curable and confined to the prostate gland.
Stage 2:
  • Cancer exhibits slight spread within the prostate.
  • Sub-levels include 2A, 2B, and 2C.
  • PSA levels range between 10 and 20, with Grade group between 1 and 4.
Stage 3:
  • Cancer may have extended beyond the prostate to other body parts.
  • Sub-stages comprise 3A, 3B, and 3C.
Stage 4:
  • This advanced stage indicates significant cancer progression.
  • Sub-levels are 4A and 4B.
Prostate Cancer Treatment Options
  • Active Surveillance: Monitoring the cancer closely without immediate treatment, suitable for low-risk cases.
  • Radical Prostatectomy: Surgical removal of the prostate gland, often recommended for localized cancer.
  • Radiation Therapy: Using high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells, either externally or internally (brachytherapy).
  • Hormonal Therapy: Reducing the levels of male hormones (androgens) to slow cancer growth or shrink tumors.
  • Chemotherapy: Administering powerful drugs to kill cancer cells or impede their growth, typically used in advanced stages.
  • Immunotherapy: Stimulating the body’s immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
  • Targeted Drug Therapy: Using medications that target specific molecules involved in cancer growth and progression.
Life After Prostate Cancer Treatment:
The success rate of prostate cancer treatment is notably high, yet the journey is a mix of both stress and excitement. During this time, individuals undergoing treatment require love, care, and support from their loved ones.

It’s common for survivors to worry about cancer recurrence or the possibility of cancer developing in other parts of the body. Attending therapy sessions specifically designed for post-treatment patients can be beneficial.

Following a structured follow-up treatment plan and attending all scheduled appointments is crucial. Adhering to the prescribed dos and don’ts recommended by your doctor is essential for a smooth recovery.

During follow-up appointments, doctors carefully monitor for any new symptoms or signs of the previous ailment. It’s imperative never to ignore any symptoms of recurrence and to promptly report them to your doctor for evaluation and further management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Your Questions: Navigate Our Frequently Asked Questions Section

Is Prostate Cancer Curable?

Yes, curability depends on the cancer’s stage. There are higher chances of recovery in the early stages and lower in the advanced stages.

Regular screening helps detect prostate cancer in its early stages, even before symptoms appear, making it easier to treat.

Prostate cancer is increasingly prevalent among Indian men aged 65 and above, now ranking as the third most common cancer among them.

According to the American Cancer Society, normal cells in the prostate gland mutate and begin to proliferate uncontrollably, leading to the development of prostate cancer.

Consult a medical specialist for screening and diagnosis. Early detection is challenging, and rapid growth could pose a significant risk at advanced stages. Therefore, it’s crucial to consult a doctor if any symptoms arise.
