Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Liver Cancer

What is Liver cancer?

Liver cancer originates in the cells of the liver. It’s important to distinguish liver cancer from metastatic cancer, which occurs when cancer originates in another part of the body and spreads to the liver.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Primary liver cancer is more prevalent in adults over 60, with men being at a higher risk than women.

Risk factors for kidney cancer include:
  • Cirrhosis
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Metabolic diseases
Preventive Measures
  • Avoiding hepatitis B and C infections and getting vaccinated against Hepatitis B
  • Limiting alcohol and tobacco use
  • Maintaining a healthy weight to avoid obesity
  • Treating inherited diseases that may increase the risk of liver cancer
Screening for Liver Cancer
Regular screening is recommended for individuals at risk of developing cirrhosis.
Screening methods for Liver cancer may include:
  • Blood tests for alpha-fetoprotein
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
Symptoms & Signs

Liver cancer may present with the following symptoms:

  • Pain, particularly in the upper right corner of the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • A hard lump felt under the ribs on the right side of the torso
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Jaundice
Diagnosis

Doctors may perform various tests to diagnose liver cancer, including:

  • Physical examination to assess symptoms and signs
  • Imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to visualize the liver and detect abnormalities
  • Biomarker testing to analyze blood levels of substances like alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
  • Biopsy, which involves taking a tissue sample from the liver to examine under a microscope for cancer cells
Stages:

Liver cancer is typically staged based on the size of the tumor and whether it has spread to other organs. The stages may include:

  • Very early stage: Tumor size smaller than 2 cm.
  • Early stage: Tumor size smaller than 5 cm.
  • Intermediate stage: Tumor may be large, or there may be multiple tumors.
  • Advanced stage: Tumor has spread to other organs in the body.
Treatment Modalities
  • Surgery: Surgical options include resection, lobectomy, ALPPS procedure, and robotic surgery, particularly for tumors limited to one part of the liver. Preoperative portal vein embolization and minimally invasive procedures may also be utilized.
  • Liver Transplant: Liver transplant involves replacing a diseased liver with a healthy liver from a donor, often used in cases where the cancer is limited and the liver is severely damaged.
  • Ablation: Ablation procedures utilize heat, microwaves, laser, or radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells.
  • Embolization: Embolization involves blocking off blood vessels that supply blood to cancer cells, preventing tumor growth. It may be combined with chemotherapy (chemoembolization) or radiation (radioembolization).
  • Medical Treatment: Systemic treatment involves injecting medication into the bloodstream to target cancer cells throughout the body. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are commonly used for advanced liver cancer.
  • Radiation: Radiation therapy utilizes highly focused, high-energy photons to shrink tumors and eliminate malignant cells in liver cancer treatment.
Dealing with Treatment:

In addition to grappling with the physical effects of liver cancer treatment, individuals also face the financial strain of managing cancer care and the emotional and social toll it takes. Oncowin offers support through psycho-onco counseling and nutritional guidance to aid patients during this challenging time.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Ensure the body stays well hydrated.
  • Maintain an optimal weight.
  • Consume small meals regularly.
Don’ts:
  • Steer clear of alcohol and tobacco.
  • Avoid fatty meats in your diet.
Post-Treatment Support

Liver cancer survivors may experience lingering side effects and long-term consequences following treatment, both physically and emotionally. It’s crucial for survivors to connect with others who have faced similar challenges and to seek support for navigating these changes.

Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:

After completing treatment, it’s important to request a follow-up care plan. Doctors will devise a personalized plan tailored to the specific type and stage of cancer you’ve experienced.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms

For cancer survivors, monitoring for signs of recurrence is crucial alongside managing other health concerns. Should cancer reappear, treatment decisions will depend on factors such as the site of the disease, prior treatments, and overall health status.
