Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Esophagus Cancer

What is Esophagus cancer?

Esophageal cancer, also known as cancer of the esophageal tube, refers to the malignancy that develops in the tube connecting the throat to the stomach, known as the esophagus or food pipe. This cancer typically originates in the inner layer of the esophageal wall and progresses outward from there.

Risk Factors and Prevention

The likelihood of developing esophageal cancer is notably elevated among individuals aged 45 to 70, with men being affected three to four times more often than women.

Key risk factors include:
  • Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption
  • Smoking
  • Barrett’s Esophagus
  • High intake of red meat
  • Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables
  • Obesity
  • Infection with Helicobacter Pylori
Preventive Measures
  • Cease the use of tobacco products and limit alcohol consumption
  • Maintain a balanced diet, healthy body weight, and engage in regular physical activity
  • Seek treatment for Barrett’s esophagus
Screening for Esophagus Cancer
For individuals diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, regular check-ups are recommended. Early detection through these check-ups can enhance the effectiveness of treatment.
Screening Methods:
  • Endoscopic examinations
  • Biopsy
Symptoms & Signs
Esophageal cancer may manifest through various symptoms, including:
  • Difficulty or pain while swallowing
  • Chest discomfort characterized by burning or pressure
  • Bloating or persistent heartburn
  • Episodes of vomiting
  • Frequent choking on food
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hoarseness or persistent coughing
  • Throat discomfort or pain beneath the breastbone

Diagnosis
To evaluate signs and symptoms suggestive of esophageal cancer, doctors may employ several diagnostic tests, including:
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • PET-CT scan

  • MRI
  • PET-CT scan
Sub-Types:
Esophageal cancer is categorized into two main subtypes:
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Adenocarcinoma
Stages:
  • Clinical stage: Determined based on diagnostic imaging.
  • Pathological stage: Also known as the surgical stage.
  • Post-neoadjuvant stage: Evaluated after neoadjuvant therapy, which involves chemotherapy or radiation administered before surgery.
Treatment Modalities
  • Surgical Oncology: Traditionally, surgery has been the primary treatment for esophageal cancer. However, for most patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer, chemotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation is recommended before surgery as it has been shown to extend life expectancy.
  • Medical Oncology: During treatment, medication is typically administered intravenously through a cannula inserted into a vein using a needle. The following types of medication are commonly used to treat esophageal cancer: chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
  • Radiation Oncology: External-Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) is the primary method of treatment for esophageal cancer.
Coping with Treatment:

In addition to managing the physical side effects of esophageal cancer therapy, patients also grapple with the financial strain of cancer care and the emotional and social ramifications. Oncowin offers psycho-oncology counseling and nutritional counseling services to support patients during their treatment journey.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Consume foods rich in calories and protein.
  • Opt for small, frequent meals.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
Don’ts:
  • Quit tobacco and alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid interruptions to your treatment regimen.
  • Steer clear of foods that are difficult to swallow.
Post-Treatment Support

After completing treatment, esophageal cancer survivors may experience long-term side effects. These effects can stem from both physical and emotional changes. It’s important for survivors to seek support and guidance from others who have gone through similar experiences with this cancer. Talking with fellow survivors can provide valuable insights and emotional support during the post-treatment phase.

Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:

After completing treatment, it’s essential to request a follow-up care plan from your healthcare provider. Doctors will create a personalized plan based on the specific type and stage of cancer you’ve experienced. This plan typically includes regular check-ups, screenings, and ongoing monitoring to ensure optimal health and detect any potential recurrence or complications early on.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms of Recurrence

For cancer survivors, the possibility of recurrence is a significant concern, alongside other health considerations. If cancer does return, your treatment options will depend on factors such as the location of the disease, previous treatments received, and your overall health. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and undergo regular surveillance and monitoring for any signs or symptoms of recurrence, enabling prompt intervention if needed.
