Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Endometrial Cancer

What is Endometrial cancer?

Endometrial cancer originates in the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. It is a type of cancer that develops specifically within the uterus.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Endometrial cancer risk can be influenced by various factors, although it is not solely caused by them. Some factors that may increase a woman’s risk for the disease include:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Family history of endometrial or colorectal cancer
  • Previous history of ovarian or breast cancer
  • Previous experience of endometrial hyperplasia
  • Radiation therapy to the pelvis for the treatment of another malignancy
Preventive Measures
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Seeking treatment for hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer
  • Seeking medical assistance for endometrial issues
  • Engaging in regular physical activity
Screening for Endometrial Cancer

It’s essential for all women to be educated about the risks and symptoms of endometrial cancer, particularly at menopause. They should be strongly encouraged to promptly inform their doctor of any abnormal vaginal bleeding, discharge, or spotting. Additionally, women should discuss the option of routine pelvic examinations with their healthcare providers to facilitate early detection and intervention if necessary.

Symptoms & Signs
Endometrial cancer may present with the following symptoms:
  • Unexpected vaginal bleeding or post-menopausal vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual vaginal discharge or spotting
  • Pelvic pain
  • Weight loss
These symptoms should prompt individuals to seek medical attention promptly for further evaluation and diagnosis.
Diagnosis
Endometrial cancer diagnostic tests are crucial in determining the presence and severity of the disease. These may include:
  • Complete physical exam and pelvic exam
  • Ultrasound
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Cystoscopy
  • Proctoscopy
  • Chest x-ray
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • CT scan (Computed Tomography)
  • PET scan (Positron Emission Tomography)
These tests help healthcare providers to accurately diagnose endometrial cancer and plan appropriate treatment strategies based on the individual’s condition.
Sub-Types and Stages

Endometrial cancer encompasses various sub-types and stages:

Sub-Types:
  • Endometrioid
  • Uterine carcinosarcoma (CS)
  • Clear cell carcinoma
  • Serous carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Small cell carcinoma
  • Dedifferentiated carcinoma
Stages:
  • Stage 1: Cancer is confined to the uterus.
  • Stage 2: Cancer has infiltrated the cervix’s connective tissue but remains within the uterus.
  • Stage 3: Cancer has spread beyond the uterus and cervix but is limited to the pelvis.
  • Stage 4: Cancer has advanced beyond the pelvis to other parts of the body.
Treatment Modalities
  • Surgical Oncology:
Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus and cervix.
Salpingo-oophorectomy: Removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Lymph node removal: Elimination of lymph nodes around the aorta and pelvis.
  • Medical Oncology:
     – Chemotherapy: Often administered post-surgery in early stages or as the primary treatment for advanced cases.
Hormone therapy: Reduces the body’s hormone levels, suitable for advanced cases not amenable to other therapies.
Targeted Therapy: Utilized alongside immunotherapy for advanced cases.
Immunotherapy: Boosts the immune system’s ability to fight cancer, particularly in advanced stages.
  • Radiation Oncology:
     – Radiation Therapy: Utilizes high-energy beams such as protons and X-rays to eliminate cancer cells. Can be administered externally or internally.
Coping with Treatment:

In addition to managing the medical side effects of endometrial cancer therapy, patients often face financial burdens and emotional challenges. Seeking support from a counselor or family member can help them navigate through these difficulties. Many healthcare facilities offer psycho-oncology counseling and nutritional counseling services to support patients during their treatment journey.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: A balanced diet and regular exercise can help manage weight during treatment.
  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can improve mood, reduce fatigue, and promote overall well-being during treatment.
  • Follow a Plant-Based Diet: Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide essential nutrients and support the body’s healing process.
Don’ts:
  • Avoid Dairy Products or Saturated Fats: Limiting intake of dairy products and saturated fats may help reduce inflammation and improve overall health during treatment.
  • Don’t Miss Follow-Up Visits: Regular follow-up visits with healthcare providers are crucial for monitoring progress, addressing any concerns, and adjusting treatment plans if necessary.
Post-Treatment Support

Endometrial cancer survivors may experience long-term side effects of treatment, including nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, mouth and vaginal sores, and hair loss. It’s essential for survivors to receive empathy, mental strength, and support from their families and healthcare providers. Joining endometrial cancer Post-Treatment Survivorship Support Groups can provide additional emotional support and guidance during the recovery process.

Surveillance and monitoring for signs and symptoms of recurrence

Surveillance and monitoring for signs and symptoms of recurrence are essential components of follow-up care for endometrial cancer survivors. The goal is to detect any potential recurrence or metastasis early to facilitate prompt intervention and improve outcomes.

Endometrial cancer survivors should attend all scheduled follow-up visits with their healthcare providers and promptly report any new or unusual symptoms that may indicate a recurrence. Common signs and symptoms of recurrence may include:

  • Persistent or worsening pelvic pain
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Recurrent bloating or abdominal discomfort
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
  • Changes in bowel habits or urinary symptoms

During follow-up visits, healthcare providers may perform physical examinations, pelvic exams, imaging tests (such as ultrasound, CT scans, or PET scans), and blood tests to monitor for any signs of recurrence. Additionally, survivors may undergo endometrial biopsies or other diagnostic procedures if warranted by their symptoms or clinical findings.

It’s crucial for survivors to remain vigilant about their health and to communicate openly with their healthcare team about any concerns or changes in their condition. By actively participating in surveillance and monitoring efforts, survivors can increase the likelihood of detecting and addressing recurrent disease early, thereby optimizing their chances of successful treatment and long-term survival.

What exactly is endometrial cancer?

Endometrial cancer refers to cancer originating from the lining of the uterus or endometrium.

Currently, there are no screening tests available for asymptomatic women to detect endometrial cancer. However, postmenopausal women should seek medical attention if they experience any abnormal bleeding.

The most common indication of endometrial cancer is unusual vaginal bleeding. This encompasses spotting, irregular menstrual flow, and bleeding between periods, particularly for premenopausal women.
