Brain Cancer
In the journey against Brain cancer, every step forward is backed by an army of support, showing that strength lies not just in the individual, but in the unity of those who stand together.
Breast Cancer
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.
Brain Cancer
What is brain cancer?
Clinicians often use the term “brain tumors” instead of “brain cancer.” Most brain tumors have the capacity to infiltrate brain tissue, albeit they rarely metastasize to other parts of the body. Even benign brain tumors can pose serious risks, as they have the potential to cause significant damage or even become life-threatening as they progress and disrupt healthy brain tissue. Brain tumors can significantly impact an individual’s cognitive functions, speech, or motor skills.
Risk Factors and Prevention
Men have a higher likelihood of developing a brain tumor compared to women. Specifically, meningioma is a type of brain tumor that occurs more frequently in women.
Risk Factors
- Exposure to radiation
- Family history of brain tumors
- Exposure to electromagnetic radiation from sources such as power lines and transformers, as well as having a compromised immune system
- Occupational exposure to pesticides and herbicides
- Head injuries
- Exposure to viruses, bacteria, and allergens
Prevention
Regrettably, brain tumors cannot be entirely prevented. However, individuals can reduce their risk by minimizing exposure to brain radiation and avoiding environmental hazards like smoking.
Screening for Brain Cancer
Currently, there are no commonly recommended tests for routinely screening for malignancies in the brain and spinal cord. Most brain tumors are detected when patients seek medical attention due to symptoms they are experiencing.
Symptoms & Signs
Brain tumor symptoms can vary, but common signs include:
Seizures, which can manifest in various forms:
- Myoclonic seizures: Sudden muscle jerks, twitches, or spasms in one or more muscles
- Tonic-Clonic seizures (Grand Mal): Loss of consciousness and muscle tone, followed by muscle contractions (twitching and relaxation)
- Sensory changes, such as visual, auditory, or olfactory alterations, without loss of consciousness
- Partial seizures, which may involve total or partial loss of awareness and involuntary repetitive movements
– Changes in personality or memory
– Nausea or vomiting
– Fatigue
– Drowsiness
– Sleep disturbances
– Altered ability to move or perform daily tasks
Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests for brain cancer are crucial in determining the presence and aggressiveness of the disease.
Various tools and tests used in diagnosis include:
- Biopsy
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- PET-CT scan (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography)
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Neurological, vision, and hearing tests
- Biomarker analysis
- Myelogram
- Lumbar puncture
- Cerebral arteriogram
Sub-Types and Stages
Brain tumors encompass various sub-types and stages, including:
Gliomas:
- Astrocytoma
- Oligodendroglioma
- Ependymomas
Non-glioma tumors:
- Meningioma
- Pineal gland and pituitary gland tumors
- Primary CNS lymphoma
- Embryonal tumors, such as Medulloblastoma
- Schwannoma
- Germ cell tumors
Grading of Brain Tumors:
Each type of brain cancer is categorized based on a specific grading system:
- Grade I: Tumors at this stage are benign. The cells closely resemble normal brain tissue and pose the least threat.
- Grade II: These tumors are cancerous, though they typically grow slowly. However, the cells exhibit more abnormalities compared to Grade I tumors.
- Grade III: This grade indicates malignant tumors with highly abnormal and rapidly proliferating cells (anaplastic).
- Grade IV: The most severe grade, tumors classified as Grade IV display the most atypical cells and have a tendency to rapidly expand.
Treatment Modalities
- Surgical Oncology: The primary treatment for brain tumors typically involves surgery. Neurosurgeons specialize in operating on the brain and spinal column, performing procedures like craniotomy, which involves removing a portion of the skull. Advances in brain tumor surgery include the use of fluorescent dyes, enhanced imaging techniques, and cortical mapping.
- Medical Oncology:
– Chemotherapy: Cancer cells are targeted and destroyed using chemicals. Treatment may involve a single chemotherapy drug or a combination of two or more drugs.
– Targeted Therapy: This approach involves using specific medications alongside chemotherapy to target cancer cells more precisely. - Electric Field Therapy: This noninvasive treatment disrupts the cellular processes necessary for tumor growth, development, and spread using a portable device. Electrodes attached to the head create an electric field. Optune is one such device used for patients with glioblastoma or recurrent glioblastoma.
- Radiation Oncology: Doctors may use radiation therapy to delay or prevent the progression of brain tumors. Various techniques include:
– Conventional radiation therapy
– 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) – Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
– Proton therapy
– Stereotactic radiosurgery
– Fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy
Coping with Treatment:
In addition to managing the medical side effects of brain cancer therapy, patients often face financial strain from the cost of cancer care, as well as emotional and social challenges. Seeking support from a counselor or a trusted family member can be instrumental in coping with treatment. Oncowin offers psycho-oncology counseling and nutritional counseling services to assist patients during their journey.Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
- Consume nutritious, wholesome foods to support your body during treatment.
- Prioritize whole foods over multivitamins for nourishment.
- Aim to maintain a healthy weight throughout your treatment journey.
Don’ts:
- Avoid overexerting yourself; listen to your body and rest when needed.
- Steer clear of unhealthy habits or lifestyles that may compromise your well-being during treatment.
- Minimize stress as much as possible to promote a positive mindset and overall health.
Post-Treatment Support
After completing treatment for brain cancer, survivors may experience long-term side effects stemming from surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Common symptoms may include headaches, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, infertility, hearing loss, and cataracts. Survivors often benefit from empathy, mental resilience, and support from their families. Joining brain cancer post-treatment survivorship support groups can provide additional assistance and understanding during this journey.
Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:
After completing treatment, it’s essential to request a follow-up care plan from your healthcare team. Doctors will develop a personalized plan tailored to the type and stage of cancer you have undergone treatment for. This plan typically includes regular check-ups, screenings, and other medical interventions aimed at monitoring your health and addressing any potential recurrence or side effects of treatment.
Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms of Recurrence
A crucial aspect of follow-up care is monitoring for any signs of cancer recurrence. It’s essential never to miss scheduled follow-up visits and to promptly report any symptoms that may indicate a recurrence. Cancer has the potential to reoccur because some cancer cells may remain undetected in the body, especially in small locations that may not have responded to treatment. During follow-up care, a healthcare provider familiar with your medical history can offer personalized information regarding your risk of recurrence and appropriate monitoring strategies.
