Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Stomach Cancer

What is Stomach cancer?

Stomach cancer, also referred to as gastric cancer, initiates when the normal, healthy cells in the stomach undergo uncontrolled growth, forming a tumor.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Individuals over 55 years old are at a higher risk of developing stomach cancer, with men being affected twice as often as women.

Risk factors for Stomach cancer include:
  • Family history of stomach cancer
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Previous stomach surgery
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco and alcohol consumption
Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of stomach cancer, consider the following preventive measures:

  • Maintain a healthy eating pattern, incorporating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Engage in regular physical activity.
  • Seek treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection, a bacterium associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer.
  • Avoid smoking.
Screening for Stomach Cancer
There isn’t a widely established or routine screening procedure for stomach cancer. However, in certain cases where individuals are at a higher risk, specific screening methods may be recommended.
Screening methods for stomach cancer include:
  • Barium Swallow: A diagnostic test where the patient swallows a chalky liquid containing barium, which coats the esophagus and stomach. X-rays are then taken to detect abnormalities.
  • Upper Endoscopy: Also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), this procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera through the mouth to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine for abnormalities.
Symptoms & Signs
Signs and symptoms of stomach cancer may include:
  • Nausea and vomiting, particularly after consuming solid meals and doing so quickly afterward.
  • Constipation.
  • Stomach bloating following meals.
  • Reduced appetite.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Sensation while eating that food is becoming trapped in the throat.
Diagnosis of Stomach Cancer

Doctors may conduct various tests to diagnose stomach cancer based on the signs and symptoms present:

  • Biopsy: A tissue sample is taken from the stomach lining and examined under a microscope to detect cancer cells.
  • Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD):A thin, flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth to visually inspect the stomach lining and obtain biopsy samples.
  • Laparoscopy:A surgical procedure where a thin, lighted tube with a camera is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen to examine the stomach and surrounding organs.
  • CT Scan:A series of X-ray images are taken from different angles to create detailed cross-sectional images of the stomach and nearby structures.
  • PET Scan: A radioactive tracer is injected into the bloodstream to highlight areas of abnormal cell activity, helping to identify cancerous regions in the stomach and other parts of the body.
Stages of stomach cancer:
For stomach cancer, the TNM staging method is commonly utilized to determine treatment options:
  • Tumor (T):This evaluates where the tumor is located and how many layers of the stomach it has invaded.
  • Node (N): This assesses whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
  • Metastasis (M): This determines whether cancer has metastasized to other organs in the body.
Treatment Modalities
  • Surgical Oncology:
Different surgical procedures are used to remove cancerous tumors from the stomach, including endoscopic mucosal resection, partial gastrectomy, and total gastrectomy, along with lymph node dissection.
  • Medical Oncology:
Medications may be administered via injection into the bloodstream (systemic treatment) to reach cancer cells throughout the body.
Advanced stomach cancer is treated with various drugs, including targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy.
  • Radiation Oncology:
Targeted radiation therapy can shrink tumors and eliminate cancer cells in nearby lymph nodes, reducing the risk of cancer spread.
Radiation therapy is not commonly used to treat stomach cancer but may be considered in certain cases.
Coping with Treatment:

In addition to managing the medical side effects of stomach cancer therapy, patients often face various challenges, including the financial burden of cancer care and the emotional and social impacts of the disease.
Oncowin offers services such as Psycho Onco-Counseling and Nutritional Counseling to support patients in coping with these challenges and improving their overall well-being.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Have small meals to ease digestion.
  • Eat regularly and ensure a balanced, healthy diet.
  • Consider incorporating liquid snacks for easy consumption.
Don’ts:
  • Avoid processed foods, which may be harder to digest.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment.
  • Limit intake of caffeine, as it can exacerbate certain side effects of treatment.
Post-Treatment Support

After completing treatment for stomach cancer, survivors may experience long-term side effects and face physical and emotional changes. It’s essential for survivors to seek support and connect with others who have experienced similar challenges.

Oncowin offers post-treatment support services to help survivors navigate through these changes and cope with any long-term or late consequences of treatment. By talking with individuals who have gone through similar experiences, survivors can find understanding, empathy, and valuable insights to aid in their recovery journey.

Follow-Up Cancer Care Plan

Following treatment completion, it’s crucial to request a follow-up treatment plan from your healthcare provider. Doctors will provide a personalized plan tailored to your specific type and stage of cancer. This plan typically includes regular follow-up appointments and screenings to monitor your health and detect any signs of recurrence or complications early on. By adhering to your follow-up care plan, you can ensure ongoing monitoring and support for your continued well-being.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms of Recurrence

For cancer survivors, vigilance for signs and symptoms of recurrence is paramount. The location of the cancer, previous treatments received, and overall health status will influence treatment options in the event of recurrence.

It’s essential to maintain regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers to monitor for any signs of recurrence or new symptoms. By staying proactive and attentive to changes in your health, you can ensure early detection and prompt intervention if cancer does recur. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and adhering to recommended screening protocols can further support ongoing surveillance and monitoring efforts.
