Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Lung Cancer

What is Lung cancer?

Lung cancer is a condition characterized by the formation of tumors within the lungs. It occurs due to the abnormal proliferation of cells in the body. The initial site of lung malignancies is typically the cells lining the bronchi and various lung regions, such as the bronchioles or alveoli.

Risk Factors and Prevention
Risk factors for Lung cancer include:
  • Exposure to radon
  • Air pollution
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to harmful gases or chemicals
  • Exposure to asbestos (fibrous crystals commonly used in fireproof insulation)
Preventive Measures
  • Maintain a balanced diet
  • Limit or avoid exposure to carcinogenic substances
  • Take steps to prevent radon exposure
  • Refrain from tobacco use or smoking
Screening for Lung Cancer

Screening examinations for lung cancer play a crucial role in detecting cancer in its early stages, thereby enhancing the chances of successful treatment. However, it’s important to note that screening for lung cancer isn’t universally recommended. Instead, it’s specifically advised for individuals with a history of smoking or current smokers.

The screening tests include:
  • Low-dose CT (LDCT) scan
  • Chest x-rays
Symptoms and Signs
  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • Coughing up blood in sputum
  • Chest pain during coughing
  • Hoarseness
  • Reduced appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Newly developing wheezing
Diagnosis

Lung cancer diagnostic procedures aim to ascertain the presence of the disease and assess its aggressiveness.

Tools and Tests:
  • Biopsy
  • Biomarker analysis
  • Mediastinoscopy/Thoracoscopy
  • MRI of the brain
  • CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis
  • PET scan
  • Thoracotomy
  • Thoracentesis
  • Bronchoscopy
Sub-Types:
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC):
     – Adenocarcinoma
     – Squamous cell carcinoma
     – Large cell (undifferentiated) carcinoma
     – Adenosquamous carcinoma
     – Sarcomatoid carcinoma
  • Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
  • Lung carcinoid tumor
Stages:
  • Stage 0: Also known as in situ illness, where cancer remains confined within the lung without spreading to surrounding healthy lung tissues.
  • Stage 1: Characterized by a small tumor size (< 3 cm) with no involvement of lymph nodes.
  • Stage 2: Involves a tumor larger than 3 cm but smaller than 5 cm, with spread to nearby lymph nodes or the lining around the lung.
  • Stage 3: Features a large tumor (between 5-7 cm) with lymph node involvement in the mediastinum (middle of the chest).
  • Stage 4: Occurs when cancer affects multiple areas of the lung, causes fluid accumulation around the lung or heart, or spreads to distant parts of the body.
Treatment Approaches
  • Surgical Oncology:
     – Lobectomy: Removal of an entire lung lobe.
     – Wedge resection: Removal of the tumor along with a margin of healthy lung tissue.
     – Segmentectomy: Removal of the part of the lung affected by cancer.
     – Pneumonectomy: Removal of the entire lung, a procedure associated with higher risks.
  • Medical Oncology:
     – Chemotherapy: Utilizes chemicals to kill cancer cells; may involve single or combination drug therapy.
     – Targeted Therapy: Specific medications targeting advanced lung cancer.
     – Immunotherapy: Boosts the immune system’s ability to combat cancer, often recommended for advanced stages either alone or with chemotherapy.
  • Radiation Oncology:
     – Radiation Therapy: Utilizes high-energy beams such as protons or X-rays to destroy cancer cells.
     – Can be administered externally or internally through implanted radiation sources.
Managing Lung Cancer Treatment Challenges:

In addition to grappling with the physical side effects of lung cancer treatment, patients often face the financial strain of medical care and endure emotional and social upheavals. Seeking support from a counselor or family member can aid in navigating through treatment challenges. OncoWin offers psycho-oncology counseling and nutritional guidance services to assist patients in coping with their journey.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Engage in regular physical activity
Don’ts:
  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Cease smoking
Providing Support for Post-Treatment Lung Cancer Survivors

Post-treatment, lung cancer survivors may experience lingering side effects from surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. These can include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin changes, and low blood counts. To navigate through these challenges, survivors need empathy, mental resilience, and support from their families. Additionally, joining lung cancer Post-Treatment Survivorship Support Groups can provide invaluable peer support and guidance.

Establishing a Follow-Up Cancer Care Plan

After completing treatment, it’s crucial to request a follow-up care plan from your healthcare provider. Doctors tailor a personalized treatment plan according to the type and stage of cancer, ensuring ongoing monitoring and support.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs of Recurrence

A crucial aspect of follow-up care involves monitoring for any signs of cancer recurrence. It’s imperative not to skip follow-up appointments and to promptly address any symptoms that may indicate a recurrence. Despite treatment, residual cancer cells may persist in the body, potentially leading to a recurrence. By maintaining regular contact with a healthcare provider familiar with your medical history, you can receive personalized guidance regarding your risk of recurrence and appropriate surveillance measures.
