Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Eye Cancer

What is Eye cancer?

Eye cancer refers to any cancer originating within the eye. This condition occurs when healthy cells in or near the eye undergo a transformation, leading to uncontrolled proliferation and the formation of a mass, known as a tumor. While some tumors affect the eye’s own cell types, others may arise from surrounding tissues.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Eye melanoma can develop at any age, with the risk typically increasing as individuals grow older. Men are slightly more predisposed to eye melanoma than women.

Key risk factors include:
  • Light-colored eyes
  • Hereditary disorders like BAP1 cancer syndrome and dysplastic nevus syndrome
  • Presence of moles
  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight
  • History of skin melanoma
  • Certain professions, such as welding
Preventive Measures
  • Limiting sun exposure
  • Wearing protective clothing and headgear
  • Applying sunscreen to exposed skin
  • Wearing wraparound sunglasses with 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB absorption to safeguard the eyes and surrounding skin.
Screening for Eye Cancer

Due to its rarity, there are no widely accepted screening protocols for individuals at average risk of eye cancer. However, regular eye examinations can aid in the early detection of certain eye tumors.

Symptoms & Signs
Eye cancer may present with various symptoms and signs, including:
  • Difficulty with eyesight, such as blurry vision or sudden vision loss
  • Floaters, which are specks or squiggles floating in the field of view
  • Partial visual impairment, characterized by the loss of a portion of the visual field
  • Presence of a dark patch developing on the iris (colored area of the eye)
  • Changes in the size or shape of the pupil, noted by smudges or dark spots in the middle of the eye
  • Shifting of the eyeball’s position within its socket
  • Bulging of the eye
  • Observing flashes of light

Diagnosis
Eye cancer diagnostic tests are essential for determining the presence and severity of the disease. These include:
  • Fundoscopic eye examination
  • Ultrasound
  • Fluorescein angiography
  • Fine needle biopsy
  • MRI of the orbit
  • PET-CT scan

Sub-Types:
Intraocular Cancers:
  • Primary Intraocular Cancers:
     – Retinoblastoma
    – Medulloepithelioma
  • Secondary Intraocular Cancers:
     – Intraocular melanoma
    – Uveal melanomas
    – Conjunctival melanomas
    – Lymphomas
Orbital and Adnexal Cancers
Stages:
The staging of eye tumors varies depending on the type and includes three components:
  • T: Tumor size
  • N: Number of lymph nodes involved
  • M: Spread to other organs or metastasis

Treatment Modalities
  • Surgical Oncology: Surgical options include:
    – Iridectomy: Partial removal of the iris.
    – Iridocyclectomy: Removal of a portion of the iris and ciliary body.
    – Sclerouvectomy / Endoresection: Surgical removal of choroidal tumors.
    – Enucleation: Surgical removal of the entire eye.
  • Medical Oncology: Treatment options may include:
    – Chemotherapy: Using chemicals to kill cancer cells, administered either as a single drug or in combination.
    – Immunotherapy: Supporting the immune system’s ability to fight cancer, particularly in advanced cases where other treatments have failed.
  • Laser Therapy: Laser therapy, including:
    – Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT)
    – Photodynamic therapy
    – Laser photocoagulation, utilized when surgery or radiation is not feasible.
  • Radiation Oncology: Radiation therapy options such as:
    – Brachytherapy (Plaque therapy)
    – External beam radiation therapy, aimed at reducing the risk of vision loss in eye malignancies.
Coping with Treatment:

In addition to managing the physical side effects of eye cancer therapy, patients often face financial burdens and emotional challenges. Seeking support from counselors or loved ones can be beneficial in coping with treatment. Oncowin offers psycho-oncology counseling and nutritional counseling services to assist patients in navigating these challenges and enhancing their overall well-being.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Maintain proper hygiene, especially around the eye area.
  • Protect the eye from potential injury or infection.
Don’ts:
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous activities that may strain the eye or compromise healing.
  • Refrain from gardening activities that could expose the eye to dirt or debris.
  • Minimize contact with pet hair to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.
Post-Treatment Support

Following eye cancer treatment, survivors may experience long-term side effects from surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. Concerns about potential eye damage and the risk of blindness may also weigh heavily on survivors, necessitating empathy, mental fortitude, and support from their families. Joining eye cancer post-treatment survivorship support groups can provide invaluable peer support and resources for coping with the challenges of survivorship.

Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:

After completing treatment, it’s essential to request a follow-up care plan from your healthcare provider. Doctors will create a personalized plan based on the specific type and stage of cancer you’ve experienced. This plan typically includes regular check-ups, screenings, and ongoing monitoring to ensure optimal health and detect any potential recurrence or complications early on.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms of Recurrence

A crucial aspect of follow-up care is monitoring for signs of cancer recurrence. It’s imperative not to miss follow-up visits and to promptly report any symptoms that may indicate a recurrence. Despite treatment, some cancer cells may remain in the body, potentially leading to a recurrence. Your healthcare provider, familiar with your medical history, can offer personalized information regarding your risk of recurrence during follow-up care.
