Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Colorectal Cancer

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer typically originates in the colon or rectum. Depending on their initial location, these malignancies may also be referred to as colon or rectal cancer. Rectal cancer and colon cancer are often grouped together due to their shared characteristics.

Risk Factors and Prevention

As individuals age, their risk of colorectal cancer increases, with the average diagnosis age being 68 for men and 72 for women with colon cancer.

Some risk factors include:
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Family history of colorectal cancer
  • Rare inherited conditions
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Adenomatous polyps (adenomas)
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • High intake of red meat
Preventive Measures
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Increasing physical activity
  • Following a balanced diet
  • Quitting smoking
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Reducing consumption of red meat
Screening for Colorectal Cancer
Screening examinations for colorectal cancer play a critical role in detecting cancer at an early stage, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful treatment.
Screening methods include:
Stool-based tests:
  • Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
  • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT)
Visual (structural) exams:
  • Colonoscopy
  • CT colonography
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Double-contrast barium enema (DCBE)
Stool DNA tests
Symptoms of colorectal cancer may include:
  • A change in bowel habits lasting longer than a few days, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrow stool
  • Feeling the need to have a bowel movement but not feeling relieved afterward
  • Bright red blood in the stool
  • Dark or black-colored stool due to blood
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Unexplained weight loss
Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests for colorectal cancer aim to determine the presence of the disease and its aggressiveness.
Diagnostic tests for colorectal cancer aim to determine the presence of the disease and its aggressiveness.
  • Colonoscopy
  • Biopsy
  • Biomarker testing
  • Blood tests
  • MRI of the abdomen and pelvis
  • CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis
  • PET scan
Stages:
  • Stage 0: Cancer has not spread beyond the mucosa.
  • Stage 1: Cancer has advanced beyond the mucosa but remains within the intestinal wall.
  • Stage 2: The malignancy has invaded or penetrated the intestinal wall.
  • Stage 3: Cancer has metastasized to nearby lymph nodes.
  • Stage 4: Cancer has spread to distant organs such as the liver, lungs, or the abdominal cavity lining. Size may vary at this stage.
Treatment Modalities
  • Surgical Oncology:

During surgery, the tumor along with some surrounding healthy tissue is removed, a procedure commonly known as surgical resection or colectomy. This is the primary treatment for most colorectal cancer patients.

  • Medical Oncology:

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy utilizes chemicals to kill cancer cells. It can involve the administration of a single chemotherapy drug or a combination of two or more drugs.

Targeted Therapy: Targeted medication therapy is often used alongside chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced colon cancer.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy is a medicinal therapy that enhances the immune system’s ability to combat cancer. It may be attempted if the cancer is advanced and other treatments have been unsuccessful.

  • Radiation Oncology:

Radiation therapy may be used to alleviate pain or discomfort or to target and kill cancer cells. It is commonly combined with chemotherapy for the treatment of early-stage rectal cancers and may also be utilized in advanced cases of colon cancer.

Coping with Treatment:

In addition to managing the medical side effects of colorectal cancer therapy, patients often face the financial strain of cancer care and the emotional and social repercussions. Seeking support from a counselor or family member can assist individuals in coping with treatment. Oncowin offers psycho-onco counseling and nutritional counseling services to aid patients during this challenging time.

Do’s and Don’ts During Treatment:
Do’s:
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Opt for smaller, more frequent meals
  • Stay adequately hydrated
Don’ts:
  • Avoid consumption of red meat
  • Aim to prevent obesity
  • Minimize intake of processed foods
Post-Treatment Support

Following colorectal cancer treatment, survivors may experience long-term side effects from surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Survivors benefit from empathy, mental resilience, and support from their families. Additionally, joining colorectal cancer post-treatment survivorship support groups can provide valuable support and resources for coping with the challenges of survivorship.

Follow-up Cancer Care Plan:

After completing treatment, it is crucial to request a follow-up treatment plan from your healthcare provider. Doctors will create a personalized plan based on the type and stage of cancer you have undergone treatment for. This plan typically includes regular check-ups, screenings, and tests to monitor for any signs of recurrence or long-term side effects of treatment. Regular follow-up appointments help ensure ongoing monitoring and management of your health after cancer treatment.

Surveillance and Monitoring for Signs & Symptoms of Recurrence

An essential aspect of follow-up care is monitoring for signs of cancer recurrence. It’s crucial never to miss follow-up visits and to promptly report any symptoms of recurrence to your healthcare provider. Cancer cells may remain undetected in the body, and regular monitoring helps detect any recurrence early. Your physician, who is familiar with your medical history, can provide personalized information about your risk of recurrence and tailor your follow-up care accordingly. Regular surveillance and monitoring are vital for ensuring early detection and timely intervention if cancer recurs.
