Breast Cancer

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer globally, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime. It can manifest in one or both breasts and may occur in various parts of the breast tissue. Breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth within the breast, which has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues. While the majority of cases occur in women, it’s important to note that men can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.

Bone Cancer

What is bone cancer?

Bone cancer is rare, accounting for only one percent of all cancers. It is diagnosed when bone cells grow abnormally. Although it can originate in any bone, it is most commonly found in the long bones of the legs and arms, as well as the pelvis.

Symptoms of bone cancer include persistent pain, swelling or a lump near the joints, and restricted joint mobility. Early diagnosis through screening is crucial for starting treatment in a timely manner to improve the chances of a cure.

Risk Factors and Prevention
Risk Factors
  • Genetic Syndromes: Conditions such as hereditary retinoblastoma and Li-Fraumeni syndrome elevate the risk of developing bone cancer.
  • Paget’s Disease: This bone disorder, often diagnosed in middle-aged individuals, can lead to bone cancer.
  • Radiation Therapy: Undergoing radiation therapy for other cancers increases the likelihood of developing bone cancer.
  • Chemotherapy: Previous chemotherapy treatments can increase the risk of osteosarcoma later in life.
Prevention
Currently, there is no known method to prevent bone cancer, as research is still ongoing to understand its causes and prevention strategies. The best approach is early detection and timely treatment. If you fall into any of the high-risk categories mentioned, it is crucial to consult with a bone cancer specialist. They can conduct screenings and determine the appropriate treatment plan based on the stage of the bone tumor.

Bone Cancer Symptoms
Common symptoms of bone tumors include:
  • Persistent and severe pain that may come and go
  • Swelling around the affected area of the bone
  • Fractures resulting from weakened bone structure
  • Fatigue and unexpected weight loss
  • Pain that worsens at night
  • Pain that does not improve with over-the-counter painkillers

Diagnosis
Diagnosing bone cancer involves conducting imaging tests based on the patient’s symptoms and signs. These tests may include:
  • Computerized Tomography (CT)
  • Bone scan
  • X-Ray
  • PET (Positron Emission Tomography)
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

In addition to imaging tests, the doctor may recommend surgical or needle-based biopsies. This involves extracting a tissue sample from the bone tumor for analysis. Biopsies help determine the tumor’s growth pattern and stage of bone cancer.

Methods of Biopsy:

There are two main methods of biopsy used to diagnose bone cancer and bone marrow cancer:

  • Needle Biopsy: Involves inserting a needle through the skin into the bone tumor to collect a tissue sample.
  •  Surgical Biopsy: Involves surgery to remove a part or the entire bone tumor for testing.
Types of Bone Cancer
Chondrosarcoma:
  • Location: Typically found in the hip, shoulder, pelvis, and occasionally the spine.
  • Characteristics: Develops slowly and often presents symptoms at advanced stages.
  • Treatment: Typically involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Ewing Sarcoma:

Characteristics: Common among teenagers and children, often developing in the pelvis and leg bones. It can also occur in the soft tissues of limbs, chest, abdomen, and other bones.

Osteosarcoma:

Characteristics: Originates in cells that form bones, commonly found in the long bones of the legs and arms. Can also develop in soft tissues and any other bone.

Risk Groups: Teenagers, young and older adults, and children are at high risk for this type of bone cancer.

Stages of Bone Cancer
  • Stage 1: Description: Bone tumors are still localized at the primary location and are typically low grade.
  • Stage 2: Description: Cancerous cells are high grade but still confined to the primary site.
  • Stage 3: Description: High-grade tumors and cancer cells have spread to other parts of the bone, indicating a higher risk.
  • Stage 4: Description: Tumor has metastasized and spread to other organs of the body. This is an advanced stage of bone cancer.
Standard Protocol for Bone Cancer Treatment
  • Surgery: Removal of the cancerous part of the bone through surgical procedures. In certain cases, amputation may be recommended by doctors to prevent the spread of cancer to other areas of the bone or body.
  • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is administered based on the condition of the bone tumor, the patient’s age, and other relevant considerations. It aims to destroy cancer cells using powerful medications.
  • Radiotherapy: Radiation therapy is used to target and eliminate cancer cells within the bone or surrounding tissues. It is often employed as part of the treatment regimen for bone cancer.
  • Supportive Medications: Throughout the entire treatment process for bone cancer, patients may receive supportive medications to manage pain, alleviate side effects of treatment, and improve overall well-being.
Follow-ups and Cancer Care Plan
Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring your recovery after bone cancer treatment. During these visits, doctors may recommend tests, x-rays, and scans to assess your progress. You will be scheduled for follow-up appointments every three months for the first two years after completing treatment. If everything progresses well, the frequency of visits will decrease to every six months for the next three years. After this initial five-year period, doctors typically recommend yearly appointments to check for any recurrence of symptoms.

What exactly is bone marrow cancer?

Bone marrow cancer originates from the stem cells responsible for producing blood. Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma are two specific types of bone marrow cancer.

While bone cancer can occur in any bone throughout the body, bone marrow cancer specifically develops within the marrow itself.

The most commonly encountered type of bone cancer is Osteosarcoma, also known as Osteogenic Sarcoma.

When bone tumors are detected early, they are often treatable. Generally, individuals diagnosed in the third stage tend to live approximately five years post-diagnosis. However, survival timelines vary significantly depending on individual cases and various factors, which doctors will discuss thoroughly during the treatment process.

Osteosarcoma typically arises during periods of rapid bone growth, which commonly occur during adolescence. Hence, bone cancers, including Osteosarcoma, are frequently diagnosed among adolescents.
